SUPPORT LEGISLATIVE REFORM
Not Without Our Children
Survivors of religious trauma need not only healing – they deserve justice! Fair treatment doesn’t begin in a courtroom, but with legislation. Policy. A bold rewriting of laws that have, for far too long, protected institutions over individuals, theology over truth, and reputation over recovery.
Too many religious organizations operate behind legal exemption, shielding them from scrutiny. When abusers are cloaked in spiritual authority, institutions sidestep consequences by “Handling matters internally.” And in some jurisdictions, clergy are still not mandated to report child abuse – leaving predators unchallenged and victims unheard.
Supporting legislative reform means recognizing religious trauma is not merely personal, but systemic. RTS echoes through generations. It impacts mental health, public safety, and the very trust we place in leadership. Survivors should not have to beg for credibility in courts and committees, effectively revictimized by due process. Their testimonies and antithetical denials of the church are evidence enough. Neither justice or healing need hinge upon the abuser’s rank or a graceless church saving face.
There should be no statute of limitations on spiritual abuse of any form whatsoever. Under the draft, Lyra’s Law, no survivor would be without representation versed in RTS. Supported via world governments, any and all legal expenses would be funded by every tax-exempt faith system – exemptions subject to change upon proven coverups and/or convictions. Since faith communities have proven they cannot/will not police themselves, its time survivors led the charge.
Initiatives like Lyra’s Law matter
Awaiting representation, Lyra’s Law is a movement in motion. A call to action born from survivor truth and the demand such weighty matters are confronted at a legislative level. The proposed legal framework calls for protections where none currently exist: mandating the reporting of abuse by all religious leaders/congregants; eliminating exemptions that protect institutions from liability – naming religious trauma for what it is – a societal crisis warranting urgent recognition and remedy.
Lyra’s Law is not just about policy. It’s prophecy – calling forth a future where abuse cannot hide behind stained glass and piety. It reminds lawmakers that sacred texts are not substitutes for law, and “Spiritual authority” is no excuse for institutional harm. Reform is not an attack on religion, rather faith in action – the idea that justice, truth, and protection of the vulnerable are sacred imperatives, not optional inconveniences.
When survivors rise – and stand we shall – lawmakers must listen! When legal systems begin reflecting the courage of those who speak out, humanity as a whole takes one step closer to creating the world we should have had all along.
