REPORT RELIGIOUS/CLERGY ABUSE
We Know What They Did Last Sunday
Abuse disguised as devotion is still abuse. No lofty title, starched collar, nor ancient scripture – no matter how revered – justifies the exploitation of another human being. Yet far too often, abuses within saintly halls lie cloaked behind stained glass. Explained away with phrases like, “It’s a spiritual matter” and “Touch not the Lord’s anointed,” or “We’ll handle it internally…”
Let us be clear – no scripture sanctifies coverup when innocent are harmed. No sermon redeems the unrepentant of crime. Quite the opposite, frankly. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly: defend the rights of the poor and needy.” – Proverbs 31: 8-9
If you or someone you know has experienced spiritual, psychological or sexual abuse – any form of coercion under the guise of religion – you have the right to report it. Not only to a pastor, church, or the board – but secular systems built to protect people, not institutions.
It’s perfectly normal to feel conflicted, as you’ve been conditioned to see the collective as God’s chosen. Subjected to fear speaking out will destroy what remnants of peace or privacy you’ve retrained. But truth is not destructive – they’ve already done the damage. Speaking truth is gospel by very definition – your words a veritable force of liberation.
This page exists to provide a clarity for those prepared to report. Weighty matters must be challenged outside the reach and influence of religious organizations. Whether by way of law enforcement, survivor-led advocacy groups, legal aid, or trauma-informed reporting hotlines. Since many survivors can be retraumatized by systems meant to protect, we’re committed to expanding our resources in that your account is heard without judgment or bias.
Again, reporting abuse isn’t about revenge, but reclaiming your power! Refusing to let those who’ve harmed you continue in moral authority, deceiving others. Reporting is about breaking chains of generational harm so many were forced to carry! Submission in name of obedience? To whom, exactly and what end? Silence protected the wolves which in turn branded lambs as liars.
For those on the fence gathering courage to name what happened – know that it was abuse and it was wrong. Perpetrators knew it then just as enablers tremble now. Please know your voice matters more than their false reputations.
“You are not betraying faith by telling the truth… you’re honouring your temple.”
